Does the USPS read the address on the envelope?

SEATTLE, Washington - Today, in my mailbox, I had mail addressed to five different places:

• My address
  
• My next-door neighbor
  
• An address exactly 10 blocks west of me
  
• An address with "St." instead of my "Ave."
  
• An address with "NE" instead of my "SW"
